Ethereum is an open source, public, decentralized, blockchain-based distributing computing platform that features a scripting functionality. Ether is a cryptocurrency where the Ethereum platform generates its blockchain. It was released on 30 July 2015 and founded by Vitalik Buterin.
Ethereum was split into two separate blockchains due to the collapse of the DAO project in 2016. The original blockchain continued as Ethereum Classic (ETC) while the new separated version became Ethereum (ETH). The value of Ether grew over 13,000% in 2017. However, a single Ether equals US$ 228.74 at the time of writing and is continuing its descent to the red zone.
The lead developer of Ethereum Name Service (ENS), Nick Johnson, announced on 5 September 2018 that the ENS users can now claim a new domain to connect to their wallets, smart contracts or other services called the .xyz domain. Johnson wrote in a blog post that the new domain name option would be available only after some testing and development but it is supported by the ENS and users who are interested in the XYZ domain can purchase it on any domain registrar and can utilize it like the ETH domain. This will allow users to create sub-domains, associate it with their wallets and much more.
A Canadian Internet service provider, EasyDNS, has created a simplified wizard to add domains and now users can manually add XYZ domain as well.
Nick Johnson mentioned that they are launching the XYZ domain on the ENS support initially as an experiment, but once they have a glimpse of how it works, they plan to launch it to other DNS Top-Level Domains (TLD) that supports the necessary features, which most of them do. He also added that the best thing about the ENS support on XYZ domain is that it doesn’t require permission or cooperation from each DNS TLD.
CoinDesk reported that ENS would permit Ethereum users to put names that are readable to humans instead of the long wallet or service addresses. This will allow more ease for people to transfer funds, use smart contracts or develop projects.
The XYZ domain is the second TLD that ENS supports following ETH domain earlier this year. The TLD is one of the highest level domains in the hierarchical internet DNS and is very necessary to visit any website on the internet or the decentralized web.
